Reporting to the Head, Western Languages Division, the Charles Warren Librarian for American History develops the flagship collection of materials relating to American history. The Librarian considers not only materials to be owned by Harvard, but also develops collaborative relationships with other institutions to extend access to information. Working closely with librarians in research, teaching, and learning, the incumbent plays an important role in the educational mission of Harvard University by establishing strong relationships with American History faculty and students, and connecting them to the collections, resources, and services that meet their research, teaching and learning needs. The Charles Warren Librarian for American History will be a member of a team of librarians in the Western Languages Division. Serves as the primary selector for library materials, in all types and formats, in the subjects of American history and American studies generally. Interacts with faculty and students to develop collections that support research and teaching. Collaborates with other Harvard librarians in developing a university-wide collection which incorporates acquisitions on a coordinated basis. Coordinates with Houghton Library, the University Archives, and the broader special collections and archival community at Harvard on the acquisition of primary source materials. Partners with other institutions to develop a coordinated North American collection which relies on shared collections and expertise. Serves as the library liaison to the Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History. Participates on the Administrative Committee of the Center. In collaboration with library colleagues, provides specialized research services to students and faculty in Americana fields. May design anddeliver library instruction sessions for students in American History. Partners with faculty to develop library support for teaching, specific to the needs of their students. Serves as a library research contact to the History Department. Makes funding allocation recommendations for Americana materials. Participates in the formation and review of written collection development policy for Americana collections. Is knowledgeable about trends in scholarly communication and open access and works effectively with the Office of Scholarly Communication to serve as a liaison to faculty and graduate students on this issue. As part of a team, works with colleagues in Information and Technical Services to design processing routines that result in rapid, efficient, and effective access to scholarly acquisitions. As part of a highly collaborative team, evaluates Americana acquisitions and collections for preservation and storage decisions. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Basic qualifications are the qualifications a candidate must possess to be considered for this position. Applications are currently being to accept for the Director of the Highland City Library. The hiring salary is $51,000-54,000 with a generous benefit package. The Library Director will supervise all Library staff which includes a full-time Assistant Librarian and eight other part-time staff. The Library receives a separate allocation of property taxes in addition to other city funds for a total budget of $316,274 (FY2016). In October of 2015 the Library had approximately 12,000 physical items checked out, 700 e-books checked out, and 8,000 card holders. This position provides leadership in the vision, direction, and management of the Highland City Public Library.
